The study looked at DNA methylation, a form of epigenetic marking that helps regulate gene activity. In simple terms, it gives researchers a way to observe how the body may be responding to environment and physical stress.

The key insight was not that players had completely different genetic profiles.

They did not.

The more interesting finding was that there were specific points in the genome where methylation patterns differed between players with higher and lower injury tendencies.

For performance teams, this matters because it expands the conversation around readiness.

Readiness is not just “Can the athlete play?”
It may become, “What is the cost of the athlete continuing to play in this state?”

That is a very different question.

And often, a more honest one.

From availability to sustainability

Football has always valued availability.

Can the player train?
Can the player play?
Can the player back up again?
Can the player be selected?

Availability matters. But availability without sustainability can become dangerous.

The athlete may be available today at the expense of tomorrow.
The club may solve this week and create a bigger problem next month.
The performance team may get the player through one match, but miss the larger adaptation picture.

Epigenetics, combined with other performance data, may eventually help clubs make more personalised decisions.

Not just based on averages.
Not just based on team load.
Not just based on what similar players usually tolerate.

But based on how this athlete appears to be responding.
